Warm and smoky day in the Front. But my perspective is a smoky day scrambling ridges in the Front is better than most days anywhere else. The whites and grays of this landscape provide an interesting contrast from the hyper-spectral colors of Glacier. Seven GMSers started up the South Fork Teton towards Headquarters Pass, where we were greeted by a large (at least ten by my count) herd of mountain goats in various stages of shed. From the pass we worked our way north on the ridgeline, loose at first then more stable closer to the crest, nothing over some borderline very light class III. Rocky Mountain Peak dominated the skyline behind us to the south; such a great peak, a personal favorite that I try to climb at least once every couple of years. Soon we were sitting on the high point of the ridge at 8,571', with Old Baldy visible to the north. We then made our way down to a grassy saddle, where Our Lake came into view. Such a pretty lake, and very rare, as there are few alpine lakes in this part of the range. We made our way down the steep slope to the lake, using goat trails, veggie belays, and a final welcome scree run to access the lake shore. A brief rest, a failed attempt at pulling a trout out of the lake, and at least one member getting accosted by a wet dog, and we were off to make the short trip back to the trailhead for refreshments. This was, as usual, a most excellent group to hike with, which is the main reason I continue to add trips to the calendar. Great hike, better people.
