Write Up:
Shockingly beautiful early October day for a ramble in the Swan, as a large (13 humans, 1 dog) group convened at the Smith Creek trailhead for an ascent of Cooney. We made our way up a burned slope along the trail, which afforded great views of the Missions across the valley. We splintered into smaller groups along the way and eventually met at the saddle with Cooney's west ridge just short of Smith Creek Pass. From there it was mostly class II with a few low III moves here and there to the summit of Cooney. Great views throughout the Swan. A few folks debated on tagging the next high point to the south, but ended up taking Cooney's north ridge to Smith Creek Pass and then up to Smith Creek Pass Peak. They eventually caught up with those of us who were content with a single peak day, and the group was together again for some post hike refreshments. An excellent end to the '26 GMS summer season for me, in the company of a great group of folks in one of my favorite places. Until next year!
