Glacier Mountaineering Society Hike to Ear Mountain On June 13, 2026, six members and one guest set out to summit Ear Mountain. June’s wet, wintry weather had made several Rocky Mountain Front peaks unsafe, and Ear Mountain was no exception. On the way to the ascent point, I lost the route data and relied on memory from three previous climbs, the most recent of which was 10 years ago as well as other members that have summited this peak. Wet conditions and melting snow made the final ascent unsafe, and we did not reach the correct chute. We chose to turn back and return to the trailhead, knowing the mountain will still be there another day. Although we were disappointed not to summit, we enjoyed a rewarding day in the backcountry with fresh air, beautiful views, and a great group of people who share a common interest. Temperatures ranged from the high 30s to the low 40s, with very light wind. Total distance: 8.0 miles, with more than 3,005 feet of elevation gain. Group: David Schuler, Brian Sugden, Dabney Langellier, Dennis Eaves, Justin Brinegar, Kristie Blackford, and Matthew Oldham Have some photos from this event that you'd like to share in our photo album? Please forward them to Tim Anderson at twamontana@gmail.com. Please note that we prefer to receive the photos in approximately 640x480 or 750x500 pixels - do NOT send original high-res photos. If you have a LOT of photos, please submit up to twenty of your favorites (only) for a day event, or up to forty of your favourites for a multi-day event. Thank you. |
