Homer Young's Peak (10,621 ft) is the highest point in the Montana portion of the Beaverhead Mountains, with 3200 feet of prominence. It does not show up previously in the GMS event history, so perhaps ours was the first GMS organized group to summit. Most of us stayed at the Miner Lake campground a couple miles from the trailhead, which had good mid-week vacancy during our climb. Round trip to the summit was about 11 miles, with ~4000 feet of elevation gain. A well-maintained trail was followed from the Miner Lake Road for ~3 miles, then became a pleasant off-trail walk for about for a mile through meadows and a nice forest, then the remaining distance to the summit was along ridges on moderately steep but fairly stable talus. Good water was found in the basin until just before the ridgeline was attained. Our team would recommend this climb for the beautiful landscape, flowers, ridgeline approach to the summit, and manageable effort. Post-climb, a nice pickup tailgate snack spread and beverages recharged everyone for our long drives home. Another highlight was the authentic Mexican restaurant in Wisdom. Some of us ate there both going to and returning from the climb.
