With a low snow year, we were hoping the trail to Lincoln Pass, at least, would be snow free. However, the higher elevations still had plenty of snow. Fortunately, the trail had been cut out, so the first six miles on trail were snow free. Along the trail was a patch of the strangely-name Dog Vomit Slime Mold. We did hit a bit of snow on the trail before Sperry Chalet. We had a lovely lunch there from the porch, with all 11 of us. Two decided to head back from there, due to the snow level beyond the chalet. The other 9 got up to Lincoln Pass, where we were greeted by a mountain goat. Then 8 of us took the ridge to the summit. The ridge had less snow than the approach to the pass and great views from Edwards to Jackson and down to Lincoln Lake. On the way down, back as a group of 9, we had some great glissading down the snow on the way back to Sperry Chalet.
15 miles from Lake McDonald Lodge, 4,377’ vertical gain, and about 9 hours.
