Write Up:
This marked the first time since 2013 that GMS climbed Appistoki via the NW approach, taking off from the South Shore Trail along Two Medicine Lake. Thank you to David Schuler who provided a track from the 2013 climb! The takeoff point from the trail led to a brief woods walk (no bushwhack) to quickly access open avalanche runout areas, and then into the scramble. The lower slope scramble was lovely, but degraded to an annoying mix of scree, ledge, and large rock through the middle portion of the ascent. The route up had more Class 3 than expected, and climbing helmets were definitely warranted. The ten GMS’ers worked as a great team to summit by 11:30am for lunch. We then made the descent to the saddle to the south, and then dropped into the spectacular Appistoki Creek cirque basin catch the Scenic Point Trail, getting back to the boat ramp at 3:30pm. Freshly harvested Flathead Lake cherries helped restore glycogen levels! The coordinators would recommend this route, as it was a pretty manageable day, and the team appreciated having a loop, with the easier miles and trail to wrap up.
