Despite hazy smoke, the group had an excellent trek to Falling Leaf and Snow Moon Lakes below Allen Mountain. A pre- climb of the launch portion of the hike to the scree field on Allen’s north shoulder, visible from the Many Glacier Hotel parking lot, confirmed the existence of an excellent human/animal trail through the woods and along the bare ridgeline to the start of the goat trail traverse portion of the hike. The key was finding the starting point off the Piegan Pass trail shortly after the fork with the Cracker trail. Once in the forest, occasional cairns helped mark the way. On hike day, the group followed this path right up to the rocky ledges and found the start of the goat trail traverse. The goat trail weaved around the mountain, past Schwab Falls, and straight to the lakes. Cooling breezes made the day very comfortable. After a leisurely lunch and a refreshing swim, the group returned the same way and enjoyed a tailgate party in the Many Glacier Hotel, out of the heat of the sun.

The group hiked a total of 4.5 miles with 2,200 feet of elevation gain.
