Write Up:
Our group of 9 climbers had a wonderful day on Castle Reef. After a nice evening at a cabin in the area, we hiked up through Wagner Basin and reached a saddle near the west end of the reef. From there we worked our way up the rocky ridge, passing several false summits and beautiful cliffs and spires. The last part of the hike was on a pleasant flat plateau, a nice way to end a climb. Views were awesome all day, and there was virtually no wind. We were also fortunate in that the fires to the west were not sending smoke our way during the climb; we had clear skies throughout. On the descent from the ridge we enjoyed a nice scree run to the basin below. The shade provided by trees below the scree field was a welcome relief after hours in the hot sun. We re-grouped back at the cabin for beverages and snacks, and made plans for next year. Thanks to all for a great day in the mountains!
