Sat, Sep 24 2011 - Great Northern Mountain (View Original Event Details)

Coordinator(s): John Oliver Ellis
Participants:James Hulvat, Jim Boyer, John Oliver Ellis, Caitlin Hunt, Thomas Bourgeois, Kevin Clairmont

Write Up:
Everyone was ready to begin the hike at 8:00 a.m. to avoid the sun on our steep non-switchback climb up to the ridge top. After a short break on the ridge top, we moved steadily up the ridge. Kevin led, with Jim, who had been to the summit before, constantly advising us to stay high on the ridge. There are numerous trails on the ridge made by humans and animals. We took one other short break for a snack, then summited at 11:45 a.m. Beautiful cloudless 360 degree views. While on the summit, we were joined by three women, all toting .44 magnums. We asked them to join GMS, but they demurred since none of us could produce a single firearm to compare with theirs. With that rebuff, we headed down and were back at the cars by 3:00 p.m. The steep climb to the ridge top was worse going down than up. Hard to beat this for a perfect late September GMS outing.
