Write Up:
Seven GMSers departed just before 9 AM from the Bear Creek trailhead for Broken Leg Mountain, the big mountain in the Swan Range just east of Bigfork. The primary worry, the weather, turned out almost perfect: cool and calm, with high clouds. The initial climbing was slippery due to new snow that had fallen on previously melted out ground and with some brush mixed in, it took extra time and energy to gain elevation to higher ground. Once higher up, the mountain was beautiful as usual on a nice spring day, walking on the whole winter's snow accumulation next to huge cornices. After a relaxing picnic on one of the many high points on the ridge, it was decided that the group felt satisfied with the accomplishment of making it that far and decided to head down. As snow gave way to slippery mixed conditions a trail appeared which was followed into the Wolf Creek drainage and back for after hike festivities. Jim Boyer shared his knowledge along the way of the plantlife and the spring flowers which are beginning to make an appearance. As Denis said, "a wonderful hike...with very congenial trekkers".
