From the Cut Bank trail, our route to Amphitheater followed the stream that emanates from the basin west of Kapunkamint for a quarter mile, then a knee-deep stream crossing, and a steep 2500-ft climb to the SE ridge of Peak 8069. On the ridge, we expected to find a goat trail across the 1.5-mile loose scree to Amphitheater saddle, but it was non-existent (apparently, the goats did not read the Summit-Post route description). Thus it was a long, slow slog across the south-facing scree on a very hot day. Each of us carried 4 liters of water, wishing it were 6. To avoid the scree-slog on the return, we walked the undulating ridge-top and over Peak 8069, which added more vertical, but much easier hiking. Views were grand in all directions, with beautiful lakes below. We all agreed it was a tough day for such a short climb, but a very enjoyable day as well. The novelty of the event was David Schuler’s demonstration of roasting fresh coffee beans on the camp stove. Pictured in the summit photo, L to R, Back Row: Steve Patitsas, James Yearous, & Kim Davis. Front Row: David Schuler, Jeremy Rossman, Bill Schulz, & Trevor Helwig. Foreground: Calin Pilskalns. Not pictured: Greg Kushnak.
