This climb was successful only because of a highly capable, friendly group of GMS members. Beginning shortly after 8:00 am, the 10-mile hike to Comeau Pass was uneventful, and from there many of us donned crampons to ascend the permanent snowfield into the Class 3 cliffs of Gunsight. David Koel and Rod Graham ascended the Class 4/5 northwest ridge route, and we all met back together on the summit. We signed in on the GMS register dating to approx. 2005, noting it was damp with moisture in spite of being in a PVC tube. It was tough to leave such a glorious view from the top in great weather conditions, but we knew we had a long way down. Most climbers glissaded the now- slushy snowfield on the descent. We returned to the vehicles at Lake McDonald at 7:30 pm after at least 22 miles of hiking and over 6,000 ft of vertical gain. Thank you to Larry Hiller for serving as co-coordinator for this exhausting outing, and thanks to ace-photographer Laurel Vielle for volunteering her talents and photographs from this climb. Have some photos from this event that you'd like to share in our photo album? Please forward them to Tim Anderson at twamontana@gmail.com. Please note that we prefer to receive the photos in approximately 640x480 or 750x500 pixels - do NOT send original high-res photos. If you have a LOT of photos, please submit up to twenty of your favorites (only) for a day event, or up to forty of your favourites for a multi-day event. Thank you. |
