Junior Climbing Clinic – July 17, 2012 Coordinator: Jer Lundgren For the past few years the GMS board has been looking at ways to offer more events oriented towards our junior members. In that light I agreed to do a small climbing clinic at the rock walls near the Iceberg trailhead, typically referred to as the "Wilbur cliffs." The cliffs are basically the walls of a small box canyon, maybe 30 feet high, with easy access from the top. This area has been used by earlier GMS members as a practice area for rock climbing. Two or three families signed up, but in the end just Ian and Kim Aston's family attended: Strider, age 6, and Kaila, 5. My intent was to gear the afternoon to the desires of the participants, taking into account ages and experience. For these two young people, we worked on proper body and foot position for lowering, and then spent the afternoon with the two of them going up and down a challenging but fun section at the head of the little canyon. Alice Ford and Joy Hawley were of great assistance, with Joy down at the bottom and Alice up top. The weather that day threatened rain, but it held off for a good while, and I think everyone was happy with the afternoon. Have some photos from this event that you'd like to share in our photo album? Please forward them to Tim Anderson at twamontana@gmail.com. Please note that we prefer to receive the photos in approximately 640x480 or 750x500 pixels - do NOT send original high-res photos. If you have a LOT of photos, please submit up to twenty of your favorites (only) for a day event, or up to forty of your favourites for a multi-day event. Thank you. |
