Eleven GMS members summited Going-to-the Sun Mountain on Wednesday, July 18, 2012. The day prior was notable for heavy rain which closed Going-to-the-Sun Road on the upper west side. Several participants had to detour around the southern edge of the Park and then drive up from St. Mary. Due to the road closure, we delayed the start until 8:30 A.M. Two participants caught up with us below the cliffs leading to the saddle between Mahtapi and GTSN. Due to the rain, the 4th class section was dripping wet during the ascent. We ascended this section safely and humped the last 1,000 feet through the choss. We enjoyed the 360 degree summit view and an extended summit lunch with friends. The cliff band was much drier on our return and everybody helped lower packs while the section was down climbed. The descent was accomplished safely and we returned to our cars in the evening. Have some photos from this event that you'd like to share in our photo album? Please forward them to Tim Anderson at twamontana@gmail.com. Please note that we prefer to receive the photos in approximately 640x480 or 750x500 pixels - do NOT send original high-res photos. If you have a LOT of photos, please submit up to twenty of your favorites (only) for a day event, or up to forty of your favourites for a multi-day event. Thank you. |
