Write Up:
The goal of our trip this year was to take young and new Mountaineers’ on a hike to that was rewarding at the same time educational at an easy pace that had great rewards. Our ultimate goal was the first hump of the Dragons Tail that rest behind Reynolds Peak and above the south side of hidden lake. The trip was a classic start at Logan pass visitor’s center with low clouds and poor visibility. The group chose to not cancel due to poor visibility but to at least hike the board walk that would give us some reference to the Hidden Lake overlook, and at that time see if the weather and visibility would improved. What a great choice for as we approached the Hidden Lake over look the clouds began to break and we were able to continue the climb. We headed south in the direction of Reynolds peak and took a not so traveled rout behind the rock reef that sits between Reynolds and Clements above Hidden Lake. I highly recommend this for anyone because it is an easy traverse that provide great views of the lake below and of Bearhat beyond. We reached the northwest base of Reynolds Peak and from there it was an easy and enjoyable ridge walk to the first hump of the Dragons Tail that reached out before us to the west. The views were magnificent and I recommend it for any new hikers who want a semi challenging hike with big rewards. We then traveled back to Logan pass via the more usual rout down the front of Reynolds picking our way through all the wonderful waterfalls of Reynolds creek that make up the head waters of the Saint Mary’s Drainage. This was a great learning venture for all the new hikers were their perseverance paid off in a big way.
