Started at Red Rock Canyon at 0800 and rode bikes 2.4 miles to the Goat Lake Trail junction, we left the bikes and hiked 2.7 miles to the Snow Shoe Cabin. We then hiked the Lost Lake Trail for 1.9 miles to Castle Divide. The Park only maintains the trail as far as the spur trail to Lost Lake so the trail is not brushed out beyond this point. The trail climbs to Castle Divide where we turned east and followed the faint trail towards Avion Ridge. The trail climbs gradually through the tamaracks to tree line then steepens, soon the summit of Avion Ridge is visible. Despite the haze from forest fires in B.C. and Alberta the views into the Castle Crown area were great. We followed the trail along the ridge crest to the Newman-Avion Ridge col. We then scrambled up the west ridge of Newman to the summit where we enjoyed the views into the Castle Crown area and into Waterton. We then followed our ascent route back to the col then turned SE down the valley to Goat Lake, then followed the maintained trail back to the Snow Shoe Trail where we picked up our bikes and enjoyed an exhilarating 2.4 mile (15 minute) ride back to the Red Rock Canyon parking lot. 15 miles, 3400 vertical and 8 hours to complete the adventure.
