Eight GMS members hiked the Crater Notch trail from Jewel Basin Rd. until reaching snow at 5700 ft. On reaching the "Notch" we ascended steep snow using crampons and mountaineering axes, gaining the top of the unnamed ridge above Squaw Lake, on the boundary of the Jewel Basin wilderness area. From there we traversed the ridge and decended to a saddle above Crater Lake, summiting Crater Mtn. after successfully navigating more steep snow and some rock on the ridge top. Return was via the same route, completing the 10 mi. 4300 vertical ft. day in 8 hours. Have some photos from this event that you'd like to share in our photo album? Please forward them to Tim Anderson at twamontana@gmail.com. Please note that we prefer to receive the photos in approximately 640x480 or 750x500 pixels - do NOT send original high-res photos. If you have a LOT of photos, please submit up to twenty of your favorites (only) for a day event, or up to forty of your favourites for a multi-day event. Thank you. |
