Mount Glendowan and Newman Peak - July 20, 2009 Coordinator: Ken McDermott A group of four very capable mountaineers and I headed out from the trailhead at Red Rock Canyon on a calm, sunny day. After a short trail hike, we climbed the drainage adjacent to Glendowan's south ridge. It was easy going for quite a while, however we eventually moved over to the ridge and dove into the forest for a bit of moderate bushwhacking. When we emerged at tree line, we encountered a very interesting Class 4 ridge. When Dell Meuchel and I first bagged Glendowan last fall, we pressed on through a lot of snow and high winds (ideal character building weather!), so we were forced to climb around the most interesting sections. Conditions were perfect today and everyone enjoyed climbing the ridge to the top. We soaked in the summit views then climbed through interesting rock in various shades of red and yellow through several more Class 4 sections along the connecting ridge to Newman. Newman is a walk-up, however there were nice views from the summit. We headed west before dropping off the ridge into the Goat Lake basin. There is a backcountry campground at Goat Lake and a well-maintained trail leads back to the trailhead. Back in the valley, we encountered a black bear sow with her cub along the trail and later spotted a grizzly cub. When we arrived at the trailhead, we decided to drive to the town site for an ice cream cone - a perfect end to a perfect day. Climbers were: Dell Meuchel, Laurel Vielle, Alda Sigvaldason, Chris Clack and Ken McDermott.
