Eight members joined me on a snowshoe in to Sperry Chalet. Since the trail up to Sperry crosses a couple open slopes where avalanches run off Mt. Edwards, I checked the Flathead Avalanche Center which was showing a Moderate rating, between that and the fact that most waiting natural avalanches has been set off the weekend before by the big rain storm I was confident we would be safe. The trip in went fast, it was a beautiful blue bird day. When we reached the first open slope sure enough it was completely covered with rubble from a large slide that looked to be about a week old. Crossing was a bit tough, imagine crossing a bolder field with snowshoes on your feet. When we crossed the second open slope the sun was heating the cliffs above and we started to see the occasional bunch of snow or ice sloughing off. Concerned that it was going to get worse we cut our lunch time short and headed down. And boy did it get worse. Through both open zones we were seeing small slides coming down about every 5 minutes. They were all very small and most petered out long before reaching the trail. But it still had all of us sweating. In spite of the bad situation the whole team kept cool heads and worked together as we quickly traversed one at a time from safety zone to safety zone while the other played spotter. In the end all agreed we had a fun time, but would not want to repeat it.
