Write Up:
This climb was to the saddle between Little Dog and Summit Mountains, offering great views and a good first-outing warm-up for the season. Steep snow blocked access to the summits of both peaks, so we enjoyed a leisurely social gathering at the saddle. From the Autumn Creek Trail (accessed from Marias Pass), we ascended via the north side of the second creek crossing, and descended the north side of the third creek. This route provided solid footing on the way up, and soft scree on the way down. Snow-free routes were limited for the ascent. A tricky section of rock was negotiated by the more-skilled rock climbers, while two of us chose an easier route up a snow chute, using ice axe and crampons. Total for the day was about 6 miles and 2700’ vertical. During the drive home, we kept hearing these “ticking sounds”. As usual for this time of year, we collected a few ticks. A great day and good experience for all!
