Write Up:
From Lubec, we hiked the Firebrand trail to gain access to Lena Lake and Red Crow Mountain. The trail was buried with tons of snow from avalanches along the north end of Calf Robe, slowing our progress a bit. We left the trail at the 6300-ft level, and traversed over to beautiful Lena Lake for a pleasant lunch break. The lake was a kaleidoscope of various shades of blue and green, with colors changing each minute in the varying sun and cloud conditions. From the north end of the lake, we joined a goat trail which provided an easy ascent to the saddle north of Red Crow, and then continued to the summit. After taking in spectacular views, we descended to Firebrand Pass, crossed its huge, steep snowdrift, and rejoined the trail back to Lubec. Total for the day was 12.8 mi and 3155’ vertical. Great day and wonderful group.
