GMS'ers had a productive weekend in Ralph Thorton's back yard, the Rocky Mountain Front west of Choteau. The prarie leading to the front is carpeted in yellow wild flowers. Once in the mountains the fragrance of the Russian Olives is overwhelming at times. On Friday Denise and I did our second attempt on peak 7672' located on the ridge between the Teton Middle Fork and the Waldron South Fork. The final 100' was a challenging and exposed ridge with solid, clean limestone rock. This obscure summit had little evidence of previous ascents. On Saturday James Hulvat, David Shuler and I climbed Ear Mountain. Seasonal access restrictions on the game reserve forced a longer trip than the normal route. Our trip started at the South Fork and the "Bobcat Trail" which skirts the game reserve. This trail is not on any map. I assume this trail is marked and maintained by the Nature Conservancy. Highlights of the day included some cloud cover and a minor threat of showers in the middle of the day and the rare Jones Columbine in the alpine. On Sunday Denise, James and I did the short and exciting trip up Wind Mountain from the South Fork. The climb appears impossible from a distance but a reasonable route presents itself as one progresses to the summit. The weekend was the first of the hot temps for the summer. The air quality was excellent due to the series of storms that moved through our region in June.
