Write Up:
Friday August 17th saw 10 GMS members descend on the Meuchel family cabin on Boulder Creek near Philipsburg Montana for a Saturday attempt on Mt. Warren in the Pintlar Mountain Range near Anaconda. Friday evening was filled with good food, cold beverages and many mountaineering stories. Saturday morning Larry Hiller, Greg and Cecelia Notess, Bruce and Rhonda White, James Hulvat, Frank Wesolovski, Larry Sandefur and hosts Gail and Dell Meuchel were off to the Mt. Warren trail head. We were greeted with a relatively clear day despite the fire activity in Montana and Idaho. The first five miles of the approach is through beautiful woods and open meadows. The crux, over 1800 feet in less than a mile, began with an unsteady boulder field. The coordinator’s memory did not serve well as the steep climb up to the summit ridge met an impassable ridge at the top. Several small groups of climbers began alternate routes which proved to be successful. Frank W. and Greg N. led the to the summit block. The mountain proved to be a much greater challenge than the coordinator remembered (age takes its toll on the mind). Frank W., Greg Notess, James Hulvat, Larry Sandefur and Dell Meuchel summited. Our colleagues were done in as much as anything by the many ups and downs of route finding, my apologies for that. At the conclusion of the climb beverages were shared and Gail’s famous salsa was enjoyed. I have to say my navigational skills were further evident on our way back as I took a wrong turn and ended up at Georgetown Lake. To no avail I tried to cover my gaff by telling them the lake tour was part of the package.
