Leaving our car pool spot west of Kalispell with lightning, thunder and rain all around us, we crossed our fingers and headed 90 miles west to Libby, thinking it may mean pizza and beer for lunch instead of post climb tail-gating. But the weather gods favored us and no rain fell and no lightning struck as we ascended the highest peak in the Cabinet Range. It was a beautiful class 3/4 climb, with the misty clouds shrouding the peak above Leigh Lake & Blackwell Glacier. A strong group of Mountaineers traveled 7 miles round trip, ascending 4,700’ on varied terrain including steep trail, deep couloirs, mossy meadows, rocky ridges, crumbling cliffs, and a short section of snow above the glacier. Oh ya, toped off with pizza and beer at Moose’s back in Kalispell.
